This site is dedicated to the memory of Ailsa Macqueen.
Ailsa Macqueen was born in Birkenhead in 1927. As a child, she remembers her mother saying to her "you will go deaf, you're a Dobie". Sure enough, when she was about 60, she got her first pair of hearing aids. As life went on, her hearing became quite dramatically worse until she could no longer cope with everyday things. Like many people, she hid this from family and friends very well. The RNID, Action on Hearing Loss' predecessor, were brilliant at helping with various aids. I lost count of the number of products we had to send back and I can only thank their returns department!
In her 80s, Ailsa had a cochlear implant which transformed her life. Once again, Action on Hearing Loss were helpful with information and support.
Now the next member of the family has hearing loss, me, her daughter and the audogram confirmed that it is hereditary. We hope that money raised in her memory will go some way to either improving hearing loss treatment, perhaps with better hearing aids which prevent the problem of background noise, or learning sufficient about hereditary hearing loss to be able to "cure" it.
She is much loved and will always be remembered by all her friends and family.
